ACEE: Amplifying the Chemical Engineers Experience
Here at the University of Delaware, we focus on amplifying the chemical engineering student experience. It is essential to focus on enhancing academic rigor – depth, complexity, and meaningful learning experiences with practical application, while strengthening professional connections, and fostering a supportive community. These pillars build upon the university’s existing strength as a top-ranked program with strong research and industry ties.
Mission
To assure equal opportunity of access and support in our Chemical Engineering program by fostering a culture of excellence, excitement, and belonging.
Community
Create a community amongst peers where students can gather, socialize, and work in a safe space. Connect students with faculty, mentors, and industry to support their academic success.
Outreach
Connect with local high school students and families through participation and hands-on engagement in an annual STEM open house.
Academic & Experiential Enhancement
To further enhance the academic experience, the department has integrated additional professional development with hands-on and applied learning opportunities into the program through the following:
- Expert Advice & Casual Connection: Our bi-monthly “Chat & Chew” sessions are a cornerstone of the ACEE mission. By pairing casual, low-stakes environments with high-level expertise, these sessions bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional reality.
- Promote undergraduate research: We actively connect students with faculty research projects from their freshman year. The department already has a strong research focus, making these opportunities more visible and accessible to undergraduates has been invaluable.
- Pathways to Innovation: Through collaboration with industry partners, students tour industry research labs, meet leading researchers, and discover what a career in industry research looks like. These lab visits connect real-world applications to your studies and students learn skills that can solve complex challenges and contribute to groundbreaking discoveries.
Quote from Elizabeth Kiernan “The ACEE research experience made me more likely to go to graduate school. I really enjoyed the experimentation part of tweaking different pieces of my tests and seeing how they affected my data. I also enjoyed investigating side problems that popped up along the way. My favorite part though, above everything else, was definitely presenting my research. I really enjoyed breaking it down and explaining it to people who were both familiar and unfamiliar with my work. It really showed me how much I truly learned.”
