The University of Delaware chapter of AIChE has been recognized as an outstanding student chapter for the 2023-2024 year, placing it among the top 10% of chapters globally. The chapter fosters a culture of belonging and support that the current executive board aims to continue in the coming year.

University of Delaware’s chapter of AIChE (American Institute for Chemical Engineers) has been selected as an outstanding student chapter for the 2023-24 school year. This recognition, given to the top 10% of chapters worldwide, demonstrates excellence within UD’s chemical engineering program.

“This award makes me proud to be the outgoing president,” said Rachel Dick, who served as co-president with John Dehais. “It allows me to leave an impact on our department, the chapter, and for future e-boards to strive for success.” Both Dick and Dehais graduated in spring 2024.

From professional events hosted by industry professionals to social events at Milburn Orchards, the chapter puts an emphasis on building tight-knit relationships between its members. This community aspect allows UD AIChE to stand out amongst other chapters.

“The UD student chapter obtained this recognition due to the connections that our members have built,” said Joshua Enszer, associate professor and undergraduate program director for the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and faculty advisor for UD AIChE. “Students are collaborative and supportive, perpetuating an environment where individuals can find a place they belong.”

One way the chapter fosters a culture of belonging is through its mentorship program, which pairs upperclassmen with first-year students who may need guidance through their time at UD. For Dick, advice from an older student who has been through similar experiences greatly helped her navigate AIChE and the chemical engineering field as a whole.

“I participated in the [mentorship] program as a first-year,” said Dick. “My mentor was amazing and provided me with a great support system as I went through the chemical engineering program.”

This year’s executive board hopes to honor this award by continuing the example set by the 2023-2024 leadership. Seniors Lila Hintz and Charlotte Gottilla served as secretary and social chair on the executive board alongside Dehais and Dick, before moving into the co-president positions. Throughout the remainder of the academic year, Hintz and Gottilla hope to carry on the legacy of the previous presidents, possibly even earning the award for a second year.

“The past executive board prioritized creating bonds between chemical engineering majors in different years,” said Gottilla. “We want to keep providing opportunities for students to form friendships that can help them academically and professionally, while also building a strong community.”
