Faculty, staff, alumni announce recent honors, presentations

Honors
Delaware State Rep. Debra Heffernan, a 1983 University of Delaware graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, was presented the State Council for Persons with Disabilities Legislative Award at the 14th annual LIFE Conference in Dover, Jan. 19. The award is given to a state or federal legislator who has worked on disability issues that have had a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. The LIFE Conference is Delaware’s premier annual conference for persons with disabilities and those who support them. Heffernan was honored for her work on legislation that removed insensitive and offensive language from the state code. In presenting the award, Pat Maichle, council director, praised Heffernan for “building a strong relationship with the disability community” and leading the state in a “tremendous step forward.” In accepting the award, Heffernan said, “It is only through our shared perspective that I will be able to help bring positive changes to how Delaware views and provides opportunity for all our citizens.”
Presentations
Norman J. Wagner, Alvin B. and Julia O. Stiles Professor and chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, co-chaired the Gordon Research Conference’s Colloidal, Macromolecular and Polyelectrolyte Solutions program Feb. 5-10 in Ventura, Calif. The conference, which runs every two years, brings together experts in the fields of material science, complex fluid physics, engineering, biochemistry and biophysics to discuss the effects and impacts colloidal, macromolecule and polyelectrolyte solutions have on nanomaterials and particles, drug delivery, energy applications, self-assembly and rheology. The following department faculty and students participated in the conference: Millicent O. Sullivan, assistant professor, and Thomas H. Epps, III, assistant professor, delivered invited lectures; Eric M. Furst, associate professor and director of the Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics (CMET), and James Swan, postdoctoral researcher, presented posters outlining their research; and Doug Godfrin, Dongcui Li and Carrie Street, graduate engineering students, attended the meeting.
Karen Zalewski and Annalisa Ekbladh, staff members in the Health and Wellness unit at the Center for Disabilities Studies, presented at the 2012 Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs annual conference, “Improving Maternal and Child Health Across the Life Span: Acting Today for Healthy Tomorrows” in Washington, D.C., Feb. 13-14. They led a poster session titled “Developing a Statewide ‘Learn the Signs. Act Early.’ and text4baby Campaign Using the Four C’s of Marketing.”
Publications
Susan Brynteson, vice provost and May Morris Director of Libraries, and Gregg Silvis, assistant director, were featured in a Library Journal article about the University of Delaware Library and the OCLC WorldShare Management Services “cloud” computing system. Library Journal is one of the leading library publications and is standard reading in the field.
Leslie Goldstein, Judge Hugh M. Morris Professor of Political Science and International Relations, contributed an essay on judicial review around the world to the International Encyclopedia of Political Science (SAGE Reference, 2012).
Cathy Matson, professor of history, has contributed an article to a special forum on “Rethinking Mercantilism,” published in the January 2012 William and Mary Quarterly, pp. 35-40. Her article is entitled “Imperial Political Economy: An Ideological Debate and Shifting Practices.”
