About Marat Orazov
Complex, highly functionalized substrates (e.g., monomers derived from lignocellulosic biomass) may undergo a multitude of reactions under forcing conditions. Biological catalytic systems have evolved to deal with such complexity by operating in dilute solutions and low temperatures. While fermentative and enzymatic pathways for chemical transformations often offer unmatched activities and selectivities, global considerations of process efficiencies and economics motivate the development of chemocatalytic systems to supplant or assist some of these biological routes. Our research program aims to develop and understand such chemocatalytic routes for functionally complex molecules by engineering individual catalysts and coupled catalytic systems. Our approach is based on: molecular sieving of substrates; multi-phase systems with phase-specific catalytic functions; transition state stabilization or destabilization by the pore walls through various phenomena generalized as confinement and hydrophobic effects. Additionally, we aim to further the development of non-traditional (e.g., electrochemical) applications of microporous materials. This endeavor involves both engineering of macro-scale architecture of crystal structures and interfaces, as well as molecular-scale development of novel active sites in confined systems.
